About The Coffee Farm
Hilda Bermeo Guevara is the owner of the 2 hectares of coffee in San Pedro, Tabacones. The San Pedro area has long been regarded as one of the best growing areas in Northern Peru, with a very high acidity cup profile, and many producers in the area have had great success in local cupping competitions.
Hilda is part of a large family who all have coffee farms in the area and she shares the management of the farm with her brothers. The farm is planted with a number of different varieties including caturra, bourbon, catuai and icatu. Hilda picks her coffee herself and with the help of her direct family, before fermenting, washing and drying the coffee at her family home.
Tabaconas belongs to the San Ignacio province and is one of the main coffee producing areas in the region. Tabaconas is one of the areas with the most potential for quality coffee in all of Jaen and San Ignacio, and producers have from the higher altitude areas have done very well in national and international competitions in recent years, showing a little of what the district has to offer. Due to its distance from Jaen, the area has been dominated by aggregators, who profit from the lack of presence of direct buyers and the lack of incentives for small producers to make the long journey to Jaen to sell their coffee. With the increased presence of specialty coffee more and more producers are aware of the value of their coffee and know that it is worth their while to transport it to Jaen to sell directly, but the vast majority of producers remain isolated and trapped, selling to local buyers. Work has been ongoing with a few families in Tabaconas for the last two years, but there are still huge challenges that prevent us reaching as many producers as we’d like to here. Over time this will change and we will start to see more and more top quality coffees coming from this district.
